Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Chemical Products: Everything You Need to Know

Interview with Dr. Filippo Busolo

Chemical safety is not just a regulatory obligation but a critical responsibility for any company managing chemical products. To better understand how to address the challenges of chemical management and ensure regulatory compliance, we turned to Dr. Filippo Busolo—a chemist, Ph.D., co-founder of Chemler sas, and a certified regulatory consultant for SDS according to UNI/PdR 60:2019.

“Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are much more than just mandatory documents,” explains Dr. Busolo. “They are essential tools for ensuring safety and transparency, while also strengthening customer trust.”

1 – What Are Safety Data Sheets (SDS)?

SDS, regulated by the Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH), are designed to communicate risks associated with chemical substances and provide the necessary measures to ensure their safe use. Each SDS includes:

  • Detailed information about the chemical product and its supplier;
  • Guidelines for safe use;
  • First-aid measures;
  • Instructions for storage and disposal.

“A well-prepared and regularly updated SDS is at the heart of safe chemical management,” emphasizes Dr. Busolo.

2 – Who Is Responsible for Providing SDS?

According to the REACH Regulation, the responsibility for delivering accurate and up-to-date SDS lies with:

  • Manufacturers;
  • Importers;
  • Distributors.

It is critical that SDS are provided to customers free of charge, either in print or digital format, at the time of the product’s delivery. Any updates resulting from regulatory changes or new risk information must be promptly communicated to the client. “It’s not enough to make the SDS available online; you must ensure that the customer has actually received it,” adds Dr. Busolo.

3 – Challenges in Managing SDS

Managing SDS can seem complex but is essential to ensure safety and compliance. Some of the most common challenges include:

  1. Regulatory Updates: Keeping up with constantly evolving regulations;
  2. Supply Chain Complexity: Ensuring accurate information is passed along the entire supply chain;
  3. Accessibility: Avoiding barriers such as broken links or complex access systems.

Dr. Busolo recommends using digital systems to streamline these processes, improve efficiency, and reduce the risk of errors.

4 – Opportunities in Proper SDS Management

An effective SDS management system provides significant advantages:

  • Trust and Transparency: Demonstrates a commitment to customer safety and environmental protection;
  • Operational Efficiency: Reduces the risk of penalties and improves internal management;
  • Competitiveness: Clear and timely communication becomes a competitive advantage in the market.

“Investing in digital systems for SDS management not only simplifies the work but also adds value to the company and its products,” states Dr. Busolo.

Optimization of Production Processes: The New FASTRIP MT System by ALIT Technologies

When it comes to innovation and customization in industrial processes, ALIT Technologies stands out for its ability to offer tailor-made solutions that meet the specific needs of its clients. This is exemplified by our recent project in Central Europe, where our technicians are installing a FASTRIP MT series system specifically developed for one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of doors and entryways.

A Customized Solution for Aluminum Stripping

The new system is designed to optimize the stripping process of aluminum sheets and profiles, thanks to a unique configuration that combines production efficiency with environmental care. At the heart of this innovation is the basket handling system, managed by a single-beam overhead crane with a double hoist. This system allows operators to load, transfer, and immerse the sheets into the stripping tank with high precision.

The core of the process is the oscillation system, a technology developed by ALIT that enables the basket to move continuously during immersion. This action allows for faster paint removal compared to traditional methods, leveraging the synergy between the mechanical and chemical actions of our stripping agent.

Technological Innovation and Sustainability

Discussing the distinctive features of the system, Mauro Burato, project manager, emphasizes:

“The stripping tank is equipped with an automatic filtration system for the stripping liquid. Through a continuous aspiration and filtration process, the liquid is treated with ALITFLOCK series flocculant and purified using a filter press, allowing the separation of paint sludge and the reintroduction of the filtered liquid into the tank. This closed cycle reduces waste and minimizes environmental impact.”

The system also features an optimized heating system that divides the tank into three zones with adjustable energy consumption. Additionally, the drying oven is designed with advanced thermal insulation to minimize heat dispersion.

Industry 4.0: Connectivity and Advanced Support

Another key feature of the system is its compatibility with Industry 4.0 standards. With an integrated control system, the information flow between the plant and the company’s software is seamless, ensuring optimal production process management. Online support is immediate, enabling quick intervention when needed.

Looking to the Future

This project represents an important step for ALIT towards even more ambitious goals. The ability to develop customized solutions for our clients is a source of pride and a testament to our commitment to research and innovation.

Client satisfaction remains our primary objective. Through projects like this, we continue to build strong relationships and provide tools that enhance production efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable and competitive industry.

Restoration of a Paint Stripping Plant in Thailand

Managing a chemical stripping plant can present significant challenges, such as high costs and process efficiency issues. This was precisely the situation faced by one of our industrial coating clients, who found themselves with an unused plant due to ineffective chemical solutions previously adopted. The plant was too expensive, complex, and had never been successfully launched.

Who is the client?

Our client, who prefers to remain anonymous, is a major international producer of high-strength stainless steel mesh used in security screens and doors. Specializing in the design and production of protective systems for residential, commercial, and industrial environments, the company stands out for the quality, safety, and innovation of its products. With a strong presence in international markets, the company is committed to providing certified, high-quality solutions.

Facing challenges with the stripping process, the client reached out to our long-standing distributor, G&R Finishing Equipment Co., Ltd. , with 27 years of experience in the powder coating sector. G&R, a leader in importing and distributing powder coating equipment in Thailand, involved ALIT Technologies Spa to solve the problem and transform the inactive plant into a productive and efficient resource.

Who is G&R Finishing Equipment?

G&R Finishing Equipment Co., Ltd. is an established company in Thailand, with extensive experience in providing solutions for powder coating. The company specializes in the import, assembly, and distribution of machinery for coating applications, ensuring high-quality equipment and excellent post-sale services. The partnership with ALIT was established to address issues related to efficiency and coating quality, aiming to improve productivity and reduce waste.

The Client’s Problem and the Solution

Before ALIT’s intervention, the client faced high costs and quality issues in stripping. The paint on the treated parts was not fully removed, compromising the final product quality and increasing scrap costs. Unable to find a compatible stripper for their materials (stainless steel mesh and perforated aluminum), the client had already tested other solutions without success. G&R proposed using ALIT’s solutions, which proved to be more effective than the previously tested products. After a thorough analysis, G&R organized a trial, sending the client’s parts for testing ALIT’s stripping technology, with the aim of finding the most suitable solution for their needs.

ALIT’s Intervention: Analysis and Innovative Solution

ALIT started the project with a detailed analysis of the plant, identifying critical issues and proposing a targeted intervention. The advanced filtration system FASTRIP FP400-17P was installed to treat the sludge generated from the stripping process. This technology allowed for the regeneration of the chemical bath by filtering out the sludge and enabling the reuse of the chemicals, minimizing waste and extending the bath’s lifespan.Additionally, Metalstrip 1334 and Aktivator 1533 chemicals were used. Metalstrip 1334, applied at 50°C, effectively stripped materials like stainless steel mesh and perforated aluminum in about 60 minutes. The Aktivator 1533 ensured the alkalinity of the bath remained stable, improving the efficiency and consistency of the process.

Technology and Results: Efficiency and Sustainability

The core of the project was the introduction of the FASTRIP FP machine, which, thanks to pressure filtration, extended the chemical bath’s operational life, reducing maintenance interventions. The use of the flocculant AlitFlock further optimized filtration quality, improving the sustainability of the process and reducing processing times.

The results were outstanding: the client was able to strip 100% of the treated parts, minimizing costs and recovering defective parts instead of discarding them. Metalstrip 1334 worked much faster than previous strippers, saving significant time during the paint removal process. Additionally, the filtration system enabled the reuse of the chemical bath, significantly reducing operating costs.

Concrete Benefits for the Client

Thanks to the introduction of the FASTRIP FP system and the use of Metalstrip 1334, Aktivator 1533, and ALITFLOCK, the client achieved highly effective internal stripping, reducing operational costs and improving process quality. The internal management of the stripping process eliminated the need to outsource operations, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the production flow.

Collaboration with G&R and Full Support from ALIT

Pietro Mandorino, area manager of ALIT, closely followed the entire project, working in close collaboration with G&R Finishing and the client to ensure timely and efficient execution. Somboon Jongdepaisarn, Managing Director of G&R, emphasized how ALIT’s solutions represented a major step forward in the quality and efficiency of the stripping process, showcasing the value of a strong, results-oriented partnership.

Conclusion: A Success for the Client and the Industry

The restoration of the stripping plant in Thailand was a significant opportunity for the client, improving efficiency and reducing operational costs. Thanks to the collaboration with G&R Finishing and ALIT Technologies, the client achieved exceptional results, restoring productivity and quality to the stripping process. This case demonstrates how technological innovation and a strong partnership can turn a challenge into an opportunity for growth and success.
