Improving Extrusion Dies Cleanliness with Claris 9346 MB

Claris 9346 MB is an innovative liquid additive specifically developed to reduce costs and cleaning times of extrusion dies for aluminium profiles.

Every company that produces aluminium profiles uses extrusion presses to transform the aluminium billets into profiles with the most varied sections. After each use, the dies of the extrusion presses – which give the shape to the profile – have traces of solidified aluminium that must be completely removed before storing the dies until they are mounted of the press again.

The dies are usually cleaned by heating caustic soda baths, that bring the aluminium residues into solution through an exothermic reaction. However, this process involves the consumption of large quantities of soda ash, which must then be dismissed of at the end of the life cycle of the bath. Furthermore, the corrosiveness of soda ash and the high operating temperatures generate corrosive and dangerous fumes, while the formation of sodium aluminate fouling implies continuous maintenance work.

ALIT Technologies has therefore developed Claris 9346 MB, an innovative product that allows to obtain a more efficient cleaning process, reducing costs and cleaning times of the extrusion dies. Claris 9346 MB:

  • Improves the overall cleanliness of the dies, facilitating the dissolution of the residues gathered in inaccessible points.
  • Significantly increases the service life of the bath.
  • Maintains the temperature of the bath at about 90° C, thus reducing fume emissions and evaporation consumption.

In the article published in the 77th issue of ipcm® International Paint & Coating Magazine (September/October 2022), we explored the technical characteristics of Claris 9346 MB and presented the case study at the Alumec plant.

Fluoride Removal with FLUORIDITE

FLUORIDITE is the new system developed by ALIT Technologies to reduce the concentration of fluorides in wastewater below the legal threshold.

Many production fields have the technical need to use particular chemical formulations with high concentrations of specific elements. For some specialised sectors in the surface treatment of steel, glass, and aluminium, for example, the use of products with high fluoride concentrations is unavoidable. However, there exist legal limits for the concentration of fluorides in surface and sewage water.

In the specific sector of aluminium coating, the continuous demand for higher productivity and pre-treatment quality has led to an increase in the use of chemicals, also resulting in critical issue in terms of waste water management.

A standard purification cycle, based mainly on an acidification phase (when necessary) followed by a neutralisation phase with lime, is very often not sufficient to achieve such low concentrations of fluorides, even with considerable dwell times in the line. In order to provide a truly effective solution to this problem without necessarily having to intervene at the plant engineering level, ALIT has developed FLUORIDITE, a liquid product that can be used directly on existing waste water treatment systems. FLUORIDITE allows to reduce the concentration of fluorides in wastewater below the legal limits.

In the article published on ipcm® International Paint&Coating Magazine (May/June 2022) n. 75, we deepen the technical characteristics of FLUORIDITE and present two case studies. Read the full article:

The winning combination of Fastrip S and Metalstrip

Find out the results that a paint stripping contractor has achieved thanks to the Fastrip S plant and the products of the Metalstrip range developed by ALIT Technologies.

When it comes to paint stripping, each company relies on a different technology according to the specific needs of the parts it treats. In the case of paint stripping contractors, however, it is important to implement solutions that allow processing components of all types and in all sizes. The chemical paint stripping industry typically uses the immersion technique, because it enables the whole workpiece to be covered and therefore provides optimum results.

In order to further optimise its services, Sverniciatura Veneta S.r.l. took an interest in high-temperature chemical paint stripping through spray systems. This is why it decided to install a Fastrip S machine, developed in recent years by ALIT Technologies.

After initial reluctance to embrace such a major technological change, the company worked with ALIT’s engineers to customise a machine that would meet its needs and be able to reach the temperature required by the company (110 °C) in order to achieve high quality results through a faster spray paint stripping process. The company is now capable of providing its customers with uniformly and optimally paint stripped products, while having improved the environmental impact of its processes and reduced resource consumption.

Fastrip AP on the June issue of Verniciatura Industriale

Fastrip AP, our system for the chemical paint stripping of aluminium profiles, has been featured in the June 2021 issue of Verniciatura Industriale.

Fastrip AP is the latest system developed by ALIT, a compact off-line plant that enables small batches of aluminium profiles to be stripped quickly.

This technological solution will enable to recover defective profiles without any loss of productivity. Like in-line chemical paint stripping plants devoted to hooks and high-performance, low-environmental impact chemical formulations, the new Fastrip AP system can be integrated into already existing processing lines or installed as a stand-alone system, possibly integrated with other ALIT paint stripping technologies.

Fastrip AP is a paint stripping system suitable for all aluminium manufacturers, extruders, converters, or custom coaters, who will thus be able to restore badly painted profiles efficiently, cost-effectively, quickly, and without burdensome logistics.

ALIT’s Fastrip AP System for Sustainable Paint Stripping of Aluminium Profiles

With the new Fastrip AP, in about three hours, defective profiles can be stripped, rinsed, and delivered ready to be reprocessed again.

Aluminium is considered the material of the future as it is light, versatile, sustainable, and fully recyclable, but it needs to be returned to its raw state in order to obtain an optimal product to reprocess.

ALIT has recently developed a new system called Fastrip AP, a compact off-line plant that enables small batches of aluminium profiles to be stripped quickly. This technological solution will especially enable coating contractors to recover defective profiles without any loss of productivity.

Like in-line chemical paint stripping plants devoted to hooks and using high-performance, low-environmental impact formulations, the new AP system can be integrated into already existing processing lines or installed as a stand-alone system, possibly integrated with other ALIT paint stripping technologies. This makes AP a paint stripping system suitable for all aluminium manufacturers, extruders, converters, or coaters that need to restore badly painted

profiles efficiently, cost-effectively, quickly, and without burdensome logistics.

Improving Efficiency, Productivity, and Environmental Friendliness with Chemical Paint Stripping

Find out the results that a company specialising in the extrusion and powder coating of aluminium profiles has achieved through its partnership with Alit.

The quality and efficiency of the paint stripping of hooks and hanging equipment are crucial to obtain good powder coating results, but they are often underestimated.

Coating users, both on their own behalf and on behalf of others, tend to consider this ancillary phase of organic coating treatments as a mere maintenance operation, which does not require careful planning or the use of particularly advanced technologies.

Reality, however, proves otherwise, especially in powder coating. Failure to strip hanging hooks and even sketchy stripping can greatly affect the quality of the applied coatings, because they prevent proper electrostatic charging of workpieces, with major consequences in terms of production waste and rework. Other aspects that tend to be overlooked in relation to paint stripping, especially with chemical products, are its healthiness and environmental impact: it is still common to observe the use of aggressive and dangerous chemical solutions in unsuitable plants.

Designing their paint stripping operations as an essential step in their coating processes, therefore, enables companies to improve efficiency, reduce their activities’ impact, and, above all, lower their costs.

Alumec Srl, a company specialising in the extrusion, machining, and finishing of aluminium profiles for architecture and industry, can testify to the effectiveness of this approach. After years spent stripping its profile-hanging hooks on a vertical system in a two-day process using an aggressive product, about three years ago it implemented a new chemical technology from the Metalstrip range, achieving excellent results in terms of both quality and process.

Metalstrip

Metalstrip is the range of innovative chemical products with high performance and low environmental impact. Metalstrip paint strippers are:

  • free from chlorinated compounds;
  • ecologically compatible;
  • formulated to optimize plant performance;
  • compatible for the treatment of ferrous material, aluminium or other light alloys.

Insourcing of the paint stripping process: the experience of Metra Color on the pages of Verniciatura Industriale

In December 2020, Metra Color installed the Fastrip T5 paint stripping tank at its Brescia headquarters. Read the full article.

Metra Color, a leading company in the aluminium sector, has installed the Fastrip T5 chemical paint stripping tank with a capacity of 800 litres at its plant in Rodengo Saiano (BS, Italy). The decision to internalize this process, often delegated to external companies, arises from the fact that the stripping of hooks and frames is of crucial importance as it affects both the coating process and the quality of the final product.

With the aim of reducing the costs and time required for stripping by external companies, Metra opted in December 2020 for the insourcing of this process.

FASTRIP T5

Fastrip T5 is the range of paint stripping tanks with a capacity of 800 litres, developed by ALIT Technologies, which combines sturdiness, flexibility and process efficiency and allows to efficiently remove paint from hooks, frames or pieces to be recovered, whether they are of ferrous metals or light alloys, without compromising their surfaces.

Fastrip T5 is built on the concept of “tank within a tank”: the sealed external tank also serves a safety basin for fluid containment. Furthermore, our systems – made in AISI-304 – are equipped with a separate self-supporting plug-and-play touchscreen control panel and fully programmable cycle parameters.

The Fastrip T5 system is available in three versions, which combine a chemical and mechanical action for optimal stripping:

  • T5-US with ultrasound technology;
  • T5-MIX with a mechanical mixer;
  • T5-MT with a series of tanks in parallel with gantry-type handling.

The paint stripping process is optimized by the use of paint strippers from our Metalstrip Up&Down range.
