Types of Paint Stripping Processes

Mechanical Paint Stripping

Mechanical paint stripping is a process using abrasive grit to remove layers of paint through high-speed impacts. It has several advantages: it is quick and effective and removes even thick coating layers without using chemicals. In addition, versatility in the choice of abrasives allows the process to be adapted to different materials, ensuring optimal results.

However, there are also disadvantages. The wrong choice of grit can damage the substrate, especially if the material is delicate. Mechanical paint stripping can also generate dust and debris, which calls for appropriate waste management and safety measures for operators. Finally, the cost of equipment and maintenance can be a limiting factor for some companies.

Pyrolytic Paint Stripping

Pyrolytic paint stripping is a technique that uses heat to remove paint from metal materials. This procedure occurs in an oven at high temperatures, which causes the coating to decompose.

Pyrolytic paint stripping is exceptionally effective because it can remove even particularly thick layers of paint. It does not use harsh chemicals, reducing environmental impact.

However, it also has some drawbacks. Operating costs can be high in terms of both energy consumption and the initial investment required to purchase and maintain the plant. It should also be highlighted that it is not a suitable paint stripping method for all types of materials, as high temperatures can damage some delicate substrates.

Chemical Paint Stripping

Chemical stripping uses solvents or chemicals to dissolve paints. It is particularly widespread, especially in applications requiring gentle and controlled removal operations.

A significant advantage of chemical stripping is its versatility. It can be applied to various materials and removes paint without damaging the substrates. In addition, initial costs are generally lower than with pyrolysis.

On the other hand, the use of chemicals can raise concerns about safety and environmental impact. It is essential to take appropriate protective measures and manage chemical waste properly. Finally, waiting times can be longer than with pyrolytic paint stripping.

Fluidized Bed Paint Stripping

Fluidized bed paint stripping uses a heating system to decompose paint by immersing the part in a tank containing sandy, refractory material at about 400 °C. This method’s benefits include the ability to remove paint without damaging the substrates, making it ideal for applications that require gentle processing. Moreover, the extraction and neutralization technology for gaseous emissions helps maintain a safe and sustainable work environment.

However, fluidized bed stripping can have high initial equipment installation and maintenance costs. Cycle times can be longer than with faster methods such as mechanical paint stripping. Finally, it is necessary to adequately train the operators to manage the system safely.

Cryogenic Paint Stripping

Cryogenic paint stripping takes advantage of extreme cold, immersing the part in liquid nitrogen to cause a thermal shock that facilitates paint peeling. Among its advantages, it is highly precise and safe because it does not use harmful chemicals and does not cause deformation in heat-sensitive materials. It is also effective in removing complex coatings, ensuring high-quality results.

However, there are also some disadvantages associated with this technology. Installing and maintaining cryogenic facilities can be expensive, limiting accessibility for some companies. In addition, using liquid nitrogen requires specific measures for the safety of operators, as extreme cold entails risks of frostbite. Finally, the availability of liquid nitrogen can be a logistical challenge in some areas.

Innovative Technologies

New and innovative technologies, such as laser and ultrasonic paint stripping, have also emerged recently. These process methods combine the effectiveness of traditional techniques with a lower environmental impact and reduced operating costs.

Laser paint stripping enables to remove paint layers precisely and without damaging the substrates. Ultrasonic paint stripping, on the other hand, uses vibrations to dissolve paint, ensuring a quick and clean process.

However, these technologies can be expensive to implement, and they require specific equipment and trained personnel.

ALIT @ ALUMINIUM 2018 – 12H33

The in-line paint stripping of hooks and steel goods has better consumption performance today

(Verona, Italy). At ALUMINIUM 2018, ALIT Technologies, a specialist in manufacturing chemical paint-stripping machines, will present the technical innovations surrounding its Fastrip ISP systems that has been designed for the in-line stripping of hooks used in electrostatic painting processes. The innovations are related, in particular, to the heating systems of tanks, which nowadays also work with oil, in order to guarantee better consumption performances. On the occasion of the fair, the recently built Fastrip plants will also be presented along with particularly interesting customised solutions.

Fastrip technologies, which were launched in 2012, are a range of highly modular machines that can adapt to pre-existing industrial lines. They are used in particular by the metalworking industries, specialising in painting, as well as anodic oxidation and extrusion industries when they have painting departments.

More than 25 plants are already operating in 15 countries around the world to witness the good reception these technologies have received, solving a problem closely felt by the sector, that is, the removal of paint from goods that have been badly painted in an economic and effective way.

Fastrip ISP systems consist of a tank positioned under the catenary in the area between the loading and unloading of the painted material. The hooks as well as metal profiles used in the painting processes are immersed in baths with chemical solutions suitable for a specific type of paint. For an optimal process, ALIT recommends its products of the Metalstrip line, which have been studied and tested by the company laboratories. The system typically takes a maximum of 3 minutes to complete the paint-stripping process. In the end, the hooks come out perfectly cleaned and ready for a new cycle of work – optimised – since the effective removal of the paint improves the electrostatics of the pieces, thus allowing a subsequent good painting of the goods to be treated.

ALIT Technologies, headquartered in San Bonifacio in the province of Verona, North-East Italy, also works in close contact with plant engineering industries to develop areas of work dedicated to paint removal in the industrial layout design itself. The metal stripping companies as well as those of metal extrusion and anodic oxidation with painting departments can, with ALIT systems, achieve great savings as compared to the manual removal of paint from badly stripped pieces or to their outsourced maintenance. Fastrip systems have constant technical support thanks to the company’s assistance team.

On the website www.alit-tech.com, news, catalogues, technical information and contacts for any further information can be found. At this link – https://www.alit-tech.com/en/list-manufatti/ – there is a table outlining the products that can be treated with Fastrip technologies.
